Thinking like an Assessor

  • What do students know about this topic (or think they know)?

  • What are they thinking at any moment in class?

  • What did they get out of today's class compared to what I wanted them to get?

  • What are they thinking when they study (or how did they go about answering a problem)?

Questioning to Guide Learning

  • In the teaching and learning process what tools do you use to tell you if the students are “getting it”?

  • How have your assessment practices helped students become better monitors of their own learning?

  • What is the difference between assessment and evaluation?

  • How do you use formative and summative evaluation?

What are some ways you activate schema and determine a student's background knowledge?

Assessment should be more than merely a test at the end of instruction to gauge learning. It should be an integral part of instruction that guides teachers and enhances students' learning.

Topic Probe

Create a word or phrase about the topic using the letters of the alphabet. Revisit to add to topic knowledge or to modify thinking about the content.

3-2-1 Reflection

3 things I know about good assessment

2 ways I have used handhelds for assessing student work…

1 question I have about handhelds and classroom assessment

Previewing a Chapter

Make category for organizing items.

Add items with probing questions.

Notes are for prior knowledge and chapter previewing.

Change the priority for instructional management for multiple chapters.

What are some ways you measure student understanding throughout a unit?

Student Created Quizzes

Students can create quizzes with Quizzler to monitor ongoing learning of content and concepts. Look here for a Quizzler tip sheet. Allow students to write test questions and model answers for specified topics, in a format consistent with tests and quizzes. This will give students the opportunity to evaluate the topics, reflect on what they understand, and what are good test items.

What software is provides feedback to students to help them monitor their  understanding of content, concepts and skills? How about TimerMath Facts, Spell It, and more...and are they "free"!

PTAlly for Self Assessment

Self-assessment and peer review can play a critical role in helping to develop students' understanding of concepts and mastery of skills

Software for Recording Personal Reflections

Students keep track of their learning with software such as Due Yesterday and Happy O Meter. Increase classroom assessment for personal reflections to strengthen the why/how connections of the essential understanding for content and concepts. Ask students-What progress  are you making toward the learning goal? What would provide additional help in building yourknowledge or skill?

One Minute Paper or One Minute Doodle

  • Use a word processor, memo, or drawing softwar

  • Summarize what was just read…

  • What was the most important (significant, crucial) thing you learned in today’s class?

  • What question(s) do you have about the material covered in today’s class?

  • What was the muddiest point in today’s lecture?

  • How can I help you learn the concept that is giving you the most trouble?

  • Write two quiz questions about the material covered today.

  • List the key concepts from today’s class.

  • What question did I ask students today that helped you the most? The least?

  • What examples did I use today that helped you the most? The least?

  • What is the main application of the material we discussed today?

  • What did you learn today that you will use or apply after graduating?

What are some ways you measure and evaluate student learning?

Evaluation student understanding with Text to Text, Text to Self, and Text to World responses. Use animation software to demonstrate understanding of content and concepts.
